the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

Course run by Keystrokes Training Services a registered CIEH Centre

Introduction

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) course is ideal for anyone who intends to become a trainer, facilitator or teacher. The qualification will provide a delegate with the necessary skills and knowledge to support learners in a learning conducive environment. The qualification has been developed for anyone entering teaching or training roles or already in-service who needs to achieve the minimum threshold status as a teacher in the lifelong learning sector – that is, adult and community learning and development, further education, libraries, archives and information services and work-based learning. The course is part of the National Qualifications Framework and is set at Level 3 and 4.

Course Content

  • Ice Breakers
  • Understand your own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
  • Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a specialist area
  • Demonstrate your session planning skills – plan, deliver, observe and evaluate a micro-teaching session
  • Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions that motivate learners
  • Understand the use of different assessment methods
  • Understand and analyse the need for accurate record keeping and procedures that can be adopted – including internal and external assessment information.
  • Constructive Feedback

Course Outcomes

  • Successful completion of the qualification will enable candidates to put into practice the following newly acquired skills:
  • Adopt an integrative approach to the theory and practice of teaching and training.
  • Reflect on their own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and potential for development.
  • Build up knowledge of principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation.
  • Develop an awareness of their professional role, the essential value systems which underpin it and the legal requirements for carrying out that role.

Assessment

Candidates are assessed on their design and delivery of a short training session (25 – 30 minute Micro Teach) which they are required to deliver to other members of the group. All candidates will also provide feedback on their peer’s Micro Teach performance. The course is also assessed by completing two assignments. Candidates are also required to complete a pre-course assessment questionnaire.
